St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is a pastoral-sized congregation in downtown Basking Ridge, which has enjoyed a rich tradition of music over the years.
Worship at St. Mark’s is anything but stuffy, though it is firmly grounded in the liturgy of the Episcopal Church. One of the things that makes St. Mark’s unique is the breadth of its music programme. Traditional hymnody and the classic repertoire of the Church are constantly supplemented by contemporary music, spirituals, bluegrass, blues, and jazz.
The parishioners of St. Mark’s have expressed a strong desire to maintain our musical breadth.
The choir at St. Mark’s currently has four paid section leaders, and sings at the 10AM service. When the summer worship schedule begins the choir takes a hiatus, and cantors lead each summer Sunday. They currently rehearse at 9AM, lead worship at 10AM, and then have a rehearsal immediately following coffee hour. Right now, there is no regularly scheduled midweek rehearsal.
On the major feasts of the year (Christmas and Easter) there are some special music offerings, and the Director secures brass/ cello etc., as needed.
In addition to the Adult Choir, there are two bell choirs. While the new Director of Music will oversee all aspects of the music programme, both bell choirs have volunteer leadership.
We aspire to have youth involvement in our musical programme.
The rector strongly supports the music programme, is a classically trained vocalist himself, and on occasion sings with the choir.
The music director reports directly to the rector.
We have a pipe organ and a Yamaha piano.
St. Mark’s mission is focused on being a place where all people, including parish leadership, are able to grow in their relationship with God.
Strong proficiency in organ and piano.
Experience in choir direction and development.
Proficiency in a broad range of music: classical, contemporary, spirituals, blues, jazz, etc.
Ability to craft a music programme for the church year and major holy days.
Experience/ knowledge of worship in liturgical churches is preferred.
A friendly and approachable personality who is able to draw in volunteer singers and be a catalyst for choir growth.
