The Holy Eucharist Rite I: October 30

The Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost

Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
And blessed be his kingdom, now and forever. Amen.

The Collect for Purity

Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Law

Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

Kyrie

Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.

The Collect

The Lord be with you.
And with thy spirit
Let us pray.

Almighty and merciful God, of whose only gift it cometh that
thy faithful people do unto thee true and laudable service:
Grant, we beseech thee, that we may run without stumbling
to obtain thy heavenly promises; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

The First Lesson—Isaiah 1:10-18

There’s a thread through the Old Testament where God says that all of the worship and sacrifices that are to be done in the Jerusalem Temple are secondary to the basic justice that God calls for: Justice for the oppressed and those in need.

A reading from the Book of Isaiah:

Hear the word of the Lord,
you rulers of Sodom!

Listen to the teaching of our God,
you people of Gomorrah!

What to me is the multitude of your sacrifices?
says the Lord;

I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
and the fat of fed beasts;

I do not delight in the blood of bulls,
or of lambs, or of goats.

When you come to appear before me,
who asked this from your hand?
Trample my courts no more;

bringing offerings is futile;
incense is an abomination to me.

New moon and sabbath and calling of convocation–
I cannot endure solemn assemblies with iniquity.

Your new moons and your appointed festivals
my soul hates;

they have become a burden to me,
I am weary of bearing them.

When you stretch out your hands,
I will hide my eyes from you;

even though you make many prayers,
I will not listen;
your hands are full of blood.

Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean;
remove the evil of your doings
from before my eyes;

cease to do evil,
learn to do good;

seek justice,
rescue the oppressed,

defend the orphan,
plead for the widow.

Come now, let us argue it out,
says the Lord:

though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be like snow;

though they are red like crimson,
they shall become like wool.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God

The Psalm 32:1-8

Psalm 32 is a psalm of confession of sins and forgiveness of sins.

Together, let us pray the 32nd Psalm, responsively, after the asterisk:

1 Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, *
and whose sin is put away!

2 Happy are they to whom the Lord imputes no guilt, *
and in whose spirit there is no guile!

3 While I held my tongue, my bones withered away, *
because of my groaning all day long.

4 For your hand was heavy upon me day and night; *
my moisture was dried up as in the heat of summer.

5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you, *
and did not conceal my guilt.

6 I said,” I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” *
Then you forgave me the guilt of my sin.

7 Therefore all the faithful will make their prayers to you in time of trouble; *
when the great waters overflow, they shall not reach them.

8 You are my hiding-place;
you preserve me from trouble; *
you surround me with shouts of deliverance.

The Second Lesson—2 Thessalonians 1:1-4, 11-12

Paul’s Second Letter to the Thessalonians was probably written around 51AD, not long after his first letter to that congregation. The Thessalonian correspondence are the oldest Christian documents in the New Testament—the oldest surviving Christian writings in the world. In this beginning to the letter, Paul gives thanks for the Thessalonian Christians, and assures them of his prayers for them.

A reading from the Second Epistle to Thessalonians:

Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy,

To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters, as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of everyone of you for one another is increasing. Therefore we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith during all your persecutions and the afflictions that you are enduring.

To this end we always pray for you, asking that our God will make you worthy of his call and will fulfill by his power every good resolve and work of faith, so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

The Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God

The Gospel Lesson—Luke 19:1-10

The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.
Glory be to thee, O Lord.

Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it. A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich. He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way. When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.” So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him. All who saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.” Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.” Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.”

The Gospel of the Lord.
Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Sermon

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People

Celebrant
Let us offer our prayers unto the Lord our God, for our needs and for the needs of all the earth.
Silence

Intercessor
Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we beseech thee to keep the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Presiding Bishop, our Bishop, our Rector, our pastoral assistant, and all thy whole Church enlivened by the Holy Ghost for ministry to all people, and buttressed against the works of the Evil One.
Hear us, Lord.
For your mercy is great.

We beseech thee to shelter thy whole creation under the shadow of thy wings, and especially these United States and all her leaders; that thy peace, thy truth, and thy Gospel would prevail unto the ages of ages.
Hear us, Lord.
For your mercy is great.

O God, the font of all grace, we beseech thee to give comfort and succor to the poor, the hungry, the homeless, and all those in want.
Hear us, Lord.
For your mercy is great.

On behalf of thy people who are sick, in pain, preparing to undergo surgery, and those in trouble of any kind, we make supplication in Jesus’ Name that you would deliver them to health and wholeness.
Hear us, Lord.
For your mercy is great.

And, O God, the King of Heaven, we pray for those who have gone before us, in thy faith and fear, and who now abide in the fullness of thy Kingdom.
Hear us, Lord.
For your mercy is great.

We pray for the sick of this parish, and those beloved to us, especially, _________ and for those serving our country at home or abroad, especially, Christopher, Richard, Stephen, Patrick, Esteban, Jeremy, Stewart, Wyatt, Maria, and Andrew.

We pray for those in our parish family celebrating birthdays this week, especially, Karen Morley, Paige Salmon, Jason van der Valk, Scott Graff, Bev Moore, Jennifer Phillips, Mathew Giordano, Brian Woolford and Rachel Wojnar, and for the anniversary of John & Sandy Lazo.

And, we pray for the Giving Garden at the Ross Farm, and all efforts to bring food and comfort to your people, O God. May the cups of all your children run over.

These, and all our prayers we offer unto you, O Lord, our Rock and our Redeemer. Amen.

The Confession of Sin and Absolution

Let us humbly confess our sins unto Almighty God.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against thee
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved thee with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of thy Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in thy will,
and walk in thy ways,
to the glory of thy Name. Amen.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him, have mercy upon us, pardon and deliver us from all our sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and bring us to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

The Peace

The peace of the Lord be always with you.

The Offertory

Holy Communion from the Reserved Sacrament

The Lord be with you.
And with thy spirit
Let us pray.

Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, did institute the Sacrament of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may thankfully receive the same in remembrance of him who in these holy mysteries giveth us a pledge of life eternal, the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who now liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit ever, one God, world without end. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

And now as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say.
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power,
and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

The Fraction

Alleluia! Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

The Prayer of Humble Access

We do not presume to come to this thy Table, O merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy. Grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

The Post-Communion Prayer

Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

The Blessing

The Dismissal

Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
